Joe Sacco combines in-depth journalistic research with visual storytelling and has become one of the most celebrated graphic novelists worldwide. In 1993 he published Palestine, a nine-part comic series on the Gaza Strip (later published in book form in 2002). His Safe Area Goražd (2000) on the war in eastern Bosnia was his award-winning war-reportage graphic novel was widely acclaimed. Footnotes in Gaza, his 400 page investigation into the massacres at Khan Younis and Rafa in 1956 was published in 2009. His work has been translated into fourteen languages and his cartoon reportage has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine.
